Fierce Fashionistas - Metaplace launches Fall collection!!!

The Herald goes backstage at MP's Fall fashion show

Amethyst announces the after-show party

Nervously waiting backstage, I watch two channels of chat scrolling up the screen: the public announcements to the audience, and the private instructions to the models. They've taken away spotlight we had at rehearsal (it made the clothes look too washed out); we're supposed to click the pumpkin when we walk off stage.

Click the pumpkin? What on Earth? Oh, ok, it's so Cuppycake can teleport us off the catwalk.

Cuppycake on the catwalk

They're playing a French remix station over the speakers; wall to wall ToToM. A Britney Spears impersonater complains they're not playing enough of "her" hits. A few of the European models are drinking black coffee to stay awake; this show is in the middle of the night, their time.

Trash under the spotlight in fashion show rehearsal

And then it's my turn to be on stage. With a whoosh, I'm teleported behind the curtain. I can't see a thing: the curtain keeps the audience from seeing us changing, but it also stops us seeing what we're doing. It's just as well we've practiced this. I change out of my street clothes and into a red evening dress, silently praying that I've not suffered some wardrobe malfunction in the dark.

With a deep breath, I step out into the light. Maybe it's just my nerves, but this is the first time all evening I've felt any lag. Not very much, but just enough to feel slow and heavy as I dance down the catwalk. I fervently hope it's not going to make me lose my balance and fall off. (Is that even possible? Now would not be a good time to find out).

I turn and wave to the fashion press in the audience (Hi Pixeleen!), then down to the end of the catwalk, and back behind the safety of the curtain. Blundering about in the dark, I hope I don't bump into some abandoned lighting control gear. Now, where is that stupid pumpkin? Another woosh, and I'm teleported back with the rest of the models.

Finally, it's all over and we can wind down at the after-show party, dancing to more ToToM.

I have to admit it. This Metaplace seems very lame to me.

Faye Serendipity

Yeah I'm sorry, why do you guys keep reporting about this? I hardly can consider it a virtual world. It's no better than Habbo hotel or what the Korean/chinese browser flash based chats/housing/clothed pixel people have been for almost five years now - with much better graphics. It doesn't feel impressive at all.

whowouldathunkit

guess you would with that surname :>P

dont like it? dont try it !

Obvious Schism

Well, since the Herald has "suspended coverage of Second Life" for a couple of days, then I guess that they have to fill the pages with something. Shame it was this, though.

I've got to be honest, I'm interested in all virtual worlds in theory but every time I visit Metaplace, I expect to see Mario, Donkey Kong and Sonic the Hedgehog running around to an 8-bit soundtrack.

There something creepy about the Metaplace avatars too. I can't put my finger on it, they're just....creepy.

coco

Feeling a bit Pedofeelic? those minihuman avatars.

Faye Serendipity

@Senban Babii
The colors scheme is very muted in the screenshots, and then anything something someone might actually want their pixel bob to wear (For example, The red dress and the orange 70s suits) seems to amplify the saturation. It's makes it appeal more, do they cost extra money to have? (I imagine so)

@whowouldathunkit
You lack reading comprehension. I have tried it though, and my preference for it is irrelevant. It's just not a virtual world in the sense of what SL is and can do.

LittleLostLinden

I think that the Blue Mars beta is more of a real virtual world than Metaplace.

Metaplace makes me giggle.

Perhaps more coverage of Blue Mars is in order. Would give people better screenshots to look at for starters.

Senban said "every time I visit Metaplace, I expect to see Mario, Donkey Kong and Sonic the Hedgehog running around to an 8-bit soundtrack."

That's a perfect description ! I was trying to think of what Metaplace reminded me of ... it's like being in an old video game !

Senban Babii

Seriously, go and spend half an hour in Metaplace then click this link and play it for ten minutes.

You won't see a difference 8P

OMG is this a world for middle schoolers? This deserves reporting on why, exactly? Did they merge with Farmville or something?

PeanutButterMonkeySluts

As an SL fashion whore this actually makes me weep. People pay real money for these non textured lego clothing items?

Wyrdwolf

This would be the first Metaplace article i've read.. If i'd read it.
I just skipped to the comments.
