SHOCK! Spamhaus Blacklists Linden Lab – E-mail Reputation Ruined!!!

Real Life heartbreak: metaverse postcards blocked, love letters lost

by Tenshi Vielle

Are you wondering why you haven't been able to send in-world to email postcards recently? The answer could be that Linden Lab's mail servers have been added to the Spamhaus real-time black list – a move that flags e-mail from Linden Lab and Second Life as über-spam, ruining the Lab's mail service reputation, leading to a cold, heartless rejection by many e-mail service providers.

The exact range of Second Life server addresses that have been blacklisted can be found here:

Spam2

How serious is this problem?

Blacklisting not only destroys the dreams of players hoping to send fun pictures from Second Life to their friends — it also has managed to break Snapzilla and killed the email-to-Flickr features.

Even worse, reliable sources report that virtual love letters sent from the metaverse may never reach the real life recipient due to the Lab's tarnished  e-mail reputation. How many hearts have been broken? After discovering certain credit cards reject Linden Lab charges, and learning SL e-mail is now blacklisted, we have to ask: when will it all end?

Not sure what is so shocking about this. Those wannabe mail cop sites stink. And if enough companies would stand together and get operations like SPAMHAUS and a few other lists terminated the world would be a better place. I’ve seen whole datacenter ip blocks blocked. Linden’s mail is no more spam than any other sites, and if people don’t want email sent to them via Linden servers, it’s is easy as turning off the mail notification.

Thank God that the Linden Lab Spam Machine has been shut down a little bit. Who needs that bloatware known as LL sending out thousands of Emails a second into the planets email system, and for what? WHAT? A bunch of dopey stuff that really matters not one bit. So thank goodness that the planet is starting to block that nasty outfit. Like the way credit cards are all starting to block it. FWIW: there were a LOT of unhappy little emo fucks on the Group chatter channels in SL last night, all wondering why their latest Furry Yiff Session pictures didn’t go through to their friends Email properly, so their friend couldn’t beat off to his nightly Baby Fur pics. Thank you spamhaus more than you could know…

Oh, yeah. The people trying to make the world a better place are the bad guys. Gotcha.

On the other hand, the article is pretty thin on details, and the link to the list of banned IP addresses simply goes to a general page having nothing to do with SL. So, points off for lack of research, points off for lack of detail, points off for inserting the word “Shock!” in the title (if we want to be shocked, we will be – don’t TELL us to be shocked, that just implies that you don’t think it’s shocking either and we won’t buy it if you don’t tell us it’s shocking – which implies that you presume us stupid. :/ )

Please please PLEASE write real stories, not this tripe.

  5. Huh?

    Mar 17th, 2009

Hey Hrmmm, did you actually go look at the SPAMHAUS PBL requrirements for getting listed? (that’s the one in the article). To get on that list you actually have to be violating your own (or your ISPs) policies on how to send e-mail from your organization. So, the fact that SL got listed means that they were not following the rules they agreed to follow.

Quite frankly, your comments make you sound like one of the people that has caused groups like SPAMHAUS to come into existence. If everyone, especially businesses, would follow the rules there would be a lot less need for these “wannabe mail cop sites” and then the world really would be a better place.

Anyone else recognizing the developing “…I do stories on the Herald inbetween regular Proactiv acne treatments, painting my toe nails and watching Tivo’d reruns of Drake & Josh…” mentality on this here blogsite?

your people are stupid! I never get spam by linden lab.. No one get spammed.
much user use the ingame feature “send IM to Mail” so their get her own IMs
if they are not online, because the need the Information. So it is worse case
if Linden is add to an blacklist -so we lose important messages..
bevor you write.. please use your brain and dont tell bullshit.. sorry!

Actually, people DO get spammed by the lab. I was responsible for numerous mass spammings using a unicode-in-instant-message bug that was fixed awhile back and also by using simple lsl (llEmail() inside a while loop can be used to mass spam any email address)

I prob sent tens of millions of intentionally annoying emails to victims during my time as a griefer and that’s just counting the stuff I sent with LL’s own servers. I always had a knack for “technically” violating laws where there is little to no legal precedent for a prosecution. You know, with the spam, not to mention using LL’s servers to mount DDoS attacks on external servers. There’s more but most of the majorly illegal shit I did remains secret even today. Anyhow, I proudly take credit for the very existence of the g-team, and the fact that LL’s emails are now finally being blocked by providers. Could this have anything to do with a short and sweet attack that I allegedly masterminded on a certain professor from Northwestern University and every single email account he owned (including school emails) only a few months ago?
As Ludlow loved to say, “In the hall of mirrors that is the interwebs, the world may never know”. How’s that for irony?

In other news, don’t hesitate to check out my latest article on medical marijuana at http://www.metrospirit.com. Alternatively, if you live in or around Augusta, GA, you can pick up a copy in print at news stands in local gas stations, hospitals, grocery stores, and god knows where else. Cheers!

Agreed. This is just typical SLfag stupidity, viewing everyone who takes a shit on SL as bad.

And you’re the fag on the other side of that coin, even if I lean towards agreeing with you. They constantly promote it, and you constantly bash it. You’re not that much different, in the end. Just another obsessed asshole connected to SL.

Can’t any of you SL losers find some middle ground?

I don’t know what you peoples problem is but apparently you seem to make brags as though spamhauss is a good thing and it could be if it wasn’t ran by idiots and plain careless wolves. (It is a Wolf in sheeps skin)
What you are really doing is looking through that wool that spamhauss has pulled over the eyes of the whole net.
You see it’s not just one E-mail server that is being blocked spamhauss has taken it upon themselves to say what gets blocked, they block not one but all dynamic IP’s (smart move there exlax) and I am not for garbage but if I had to through the baby out with the bath water then I’d keep both ibstead. but not spamhauss they are EVAL plain and simple. And I am not into nor do I promote spam, in fact I don;t even use reply to all when sending out a message. But I do pay for my internet connection and I do not appreciate some scumbag providing list to unsuspecting large E-mail servers that block my forums outgoing mail ( It probably send out one a month but that never gets anywhere) so that a poor man can’t even run a small forum. And I wish spamhauss had their all cure use you ISP as a smarthost not for me no-cure cure stuck where the sun don’t shine. wonder how people will like them when they find out that the reason they don’t get much E-mail is SPAMHAUSS ?
You people probably Voted for Oboma too. Boy you must be feeling really Dumb about now. (If not then give it time.)

What a load of dribble over nothing. The original poster Tenshi Vielle/SLHerald hasn’t a clue and imparts the non-clue to others who fry it up further. Do you even realize what the Spamhaus PBL is? It is *NOT* a blacklist, it’s a list of all of the world’s dynamic IP ranges. If SLHerald wants to get a clue just go and read the Spamhaus PBL web page which explains what it is. Linden Lab’s servers have *NOT* been blacklisted, they were simply running off a dynamic IP range and were thus listed in the PBL as being dynamic IPs (which they are!). But anyone can remove any IP they like from the PBL in one minute flat, automatically and no questions asked by Spamhaus, so all Linden Lab had to do was go to the Spamhaus PBL web page and remove those Linden IPs from the PBL, which is obviously what Linden Labs finally woke up and did since their dynamic IPs are no longer on the PBL.

Way to go Tenshi Vielle/SLHerald, how about an “aliens kidnapped my cat” story next?

I am not so familiar with the particular site mentioned here at the present , however as long as this or any other site is being blacklisted unjustly, then the same applies were as these PBL are of concern, in that the PBL list although thought by many not to be a blacklist, lets set the record straight and make no mistake about it, they are being provided and also being put to use to do just that; (blacklist all dynamic IP’s) and anyone here or anywhere else that makes a claim that anyone must qualify in some way to get on this dynamic list or that there is an easy way off the list, only shows themselves to be totally ignorant of the fact that they apearently naver bothered to thoughly read . The fact is this list is made up of dynamically assigned IP pools , not because they have spammed anyone; but because spamhaus thinks it is funny (and some how smart) to provide these list and have those people that are ignorant to believe that the list is no list or that one must first do something to get on it, or that the list are somehow a part of everyones big plan to stop spam. It was and is spamhaus’s idea alone to blacklist all dynamic IP’s and no one else, and that’s that. Now bug off SPAMHAUS and yes I am from the U.S.A. Apparently you have no idea what constitutes spam, nor do you care. You prove this by creating a careless list; once put into use, that list you provide reck’s havoc on far more peoples lives than any spammer has ever dreamed of doing. So they push ads while you push a careless list hmmm lets see now , did spammers ever block my e-mails completely? Your days are numbered and the countdown has started.!
