Rising cost of Linden Governance Team to blame for OpenSpace price hikes?

by Pixeleen Mistral, National Affairs desk

In the week since Jack Linden’s announcement of a 66% virtual land price increase, the grid has seen nearly continuous protests and discussion of what prompted the price gouging. To better understand Linden Lab’s cost structure and vision of the common good, Sunday night I visited the Something Awful goons in the “What” sim, and learned that involuntary avatar name changes are an important new service provided by the Lab — even for residents with names that were acceptable for the last 22 months.

Could this attention to detail be driving the Lab’s desire for more land income?

Censored

Consider the case of an avatar now known as CensoredMy Lunt. Mr. Lunt was born into our virtual world in December of 2006, and was known as ClickMy Lunt until about a month ago. Mr. Lunt’s avatar currently appears to be a sort of wooden owl, and he told me his story:

CensoredMy Lunt: hey pixleen are you gonna write about how i was banned but now im not and how the lindens changed my name but they did such a shitty job that all shit is fucked up
Pixeleen Mistral: I’m just taking a break from OpenSpace sim drama

Pixeleen Mistral: they changed your name?
CensoredMy Lunt: yes

Pixeleen Mistral: but you had that name for years
CensoredMy Lunt: but it still comes up on my profile and my objects and my buddies

Pixeleen Mistral: LOL! your profile DOES still have the old name!
CensoredMy Lunt: ya i know. thats what i said

Pixeleen Mistral: LL is sloppy!!!
CensoredMy Lunt: so some soccer mom must have been offended
CensoredMy Lunt: they sent me an email sayin i was suspended for VULGAR NAME
CensoredMy Lunt: and told me to make a ticket so i did and it said
CensoredMy Lunt: YOU HAVE TO CHANGE YOUR NAME GIVE US A LIST OF SUGGESTIONS
CensoredMy Lunt: so i did
CensoredMy Lunt: then like a week later they got around to changing it

Pixeleen Mistral: the GTeam must not have enough to do

After my visit to “What” sim, I pondered the Lab’s priorities. While some are concerned about the fate of the in-world economy, particularly the virtual land business, and pointed questions are asked about cack-handed Jack Linden’s attempt to break a deflationary death spiral in mainland prices by causing a deflationary death spiral in OpenSpace sim land prices, it is comforting to know that the Lab has plenty of time to assist residents’ in their choice of names.

Has “ClickMy” joined “Tizzers” as a forbidden first name good for an insta-ban? Perhaps the Lab could publish a list fo prohibited names in the interest of greater efficiency? As the in-world economy crashes, there is bound to be belt-tightening all around.

A while ago a friend’s name was changed by the Lindens as they considered it too obscene for a PG sim he was shopping at. His name used to be Fuct Cliffhanger and the Lindens changed it into ‘Sir’ Cliffhanger. Yes, he was made a nobleman, how nice is that? However, it took about three weeks until his new name showed up in his wife’s partner box. She was still married to Fuct.

Considering that ‘Rapist Childs’ is still around, one really has to wonder about the Lindens and their idea of being obscene …

No Pix, Dearie, ClickMy isn’t a forbidden name.

The fact that the full name is ClickMy Lunt was the reason for the name change. Someone must have finally told LL just how close “Kunt” is to another word.

Ratcloner is now a name getting banned regularly as well.

Typo in story: The name was not originally “CLICKMY” it was “CICKMY” (enlarge and look at profile above in story for yourself) So, Cickmy Lunt is vulgar when the first letters of the first and last name are swapped. funny i guess.

I can see why LL censored his name and thats because 7th graders are not allowed on the main grid.

    ITS CICK (pronounced KICK). so….

So someone pissed someone else off, they filed an AR on the name, a Linden drone changed the name… Yep thats a big story there, good one.

And as far as mixing it all up with the “Lab’s priorities” come on. The bloke that cleans up the place at night didn’t get a vote on the 67% price increase any more than the one that deals with ARs.

With much anger and frustration I ask after watching the sim I spent the last 6 months developing vanish from the grid… What in the hell is LL’s problem? What is their major malfunction – and no I’m not asking what the latest half assed bug is in their pathetic little system.

This has gone way beyond absurd with all the stupid, assanine things they’re pulling. So gee, I’m tired of the name “Orion”. Does that mean that regardless of their rules it can be changed now? But oops. That’ll fuck up their already screwed beyond belief database.

Gee, how about putting in a few more “value added” features into your system? Like gee, maybe I wanna totally move into an alt. Can ya transfer my inventory? But why not, its as simple as one fucking sql query! IDIOTS! PURE AND SIMPLE IDIOTS!

I’m tellin ya, that freaking Wall Street weasel “M” they put in charge had better freakin get his act together! Get off the damned golf course and start feeding some direction into his god damned company! But gee, maybe he’s just looking to do as the rest of the Wall Street fuckwads have done and screw the company and its employees to high hell while he rides his golden parachute right down to a lofty little condo down in Miami.

Now now, Razr, you might want to be careful about pissing off the Herald’s valuable 7th grade demographic…

After all, I’d estimate it makes up at least 50% of the commenters on the site. Possibly more on some stories.

And yeah, LL’s gonna censor this name 9 times out of 10. I’m actually kinda surprised that it lasted this long.

It makes perfect sense when you realize that Second Life is run entirely by high-minded Asperger intellectuals who know much better than the vapid neurotypicals that inhabit it.

is that not against the TOS, unauthorized access to someones account without notice and permission to change the name.

LL cant break there own rules……….oh wait they do they took 2.1 million off me for being a victim of fraud

LL breaking their own rules. Thats not a bug, thats ‘enhancing user experience’. CickMy Lunt was obviously a name that was overburdening the system with excessive frivolous abuse reports from idiotic PC busybodies, so they changed the name simply to reduce their administrative overhead.

yeah im a girl btw I KNOW ITS HARD TO BELIEVE

i was suspended and instructed to submit a ticket to change my name. i did and submitted several suggestions. when i logged in under my new name i found that my main profile page had the stuff deleted. it was a log from torley’s office hours where someone namedropped me. so i guess we know the real reason for the change, whoever ARed me was taken seriously and once they saw the log they didnt want to look stupid

    If Lunt’s name began with a C
    ….then he is indeed one.

    I have to agree – it’s offensive
    really really offensive.

Let me give Lunt a good slap for everyone

Maybe if you people acted like adults once in a while you wouldn’t have these problems.

But by all means, make yourselves into victims.

That’s what bullies always do when they get nailed for something.

    What’s the problem?

Didnt get enough attention from mommy and daddy?

It’s of course a very good way, pick a name that’s guaranteed to get Linden’s attention and then act all suprised if they act upon it. Like Intblubber did with the Tizzers name.

Bravo, you win one internets. Now go play outside.

    drama,
How, again, is the word ‘tizzers’ fit under the “broadly offensive” part of the ToS? Actually whats truly broadly offensive is FASCISM.

“How, again, is the word ‘tizzers’ fit under the “broadly offensive” part of the ToS?”

You dont really get it… It’s ‘offensive’ to people up at the Lab. Might not be to you or the rest of the planet, it’s history has made it so.

Also, admit yourself; When choosing such a name, just like Cickmy Lunt, it’s purely to see how long it’ll last. And that’s exactly why LL prolly didnt like it.

Like poking a tiger with a stick and seeing when it’ll eat you.

BTW, politicslike ‘facism’ are always chugged about here and there.
    That’s more than a little bit silly…
This isnt a country it’s a game. Or service, so you will. They can do what they want with it, it’s theirs and their investor’s to decide on what happens.
If Blizzard at one time would decide to off all dwarves in WoW, abandoning them as a playable race, will you talk about genocide as well? Compare them to nazi’s? Come on.

Some games are free and opensource. Communist bastards!

Not the only person this has happened to – I met somebody whose original first name referred to female anatomy – they changed the first name to something more tame, but when you pull up her profile, the original name is still there.

I think they didn’t change it not because they forgot, but because they CAN’T.

    Lame either way.
